Alliance Coal, LLC and Affiliates have established a scholarship program to recognize and reward dependents of long-service employees who plan to pursue postsecondary education in a college or vocational school program. Scholarships are offered each year for full-time study at any accredited post-secondary institution of the student's choice.
This scholarship program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance, and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations and individuals. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, gender, disability or national origin.
Applicants must be dependent* children age 26 and under, of full-time Alliance Coal, LLC and Affiliates employees who have a minimum of one (1) year continuous employment with the company as of the application deadline date.
*Dependent children are defined as natural and legally adopted children or stepchildren living in the employee household or primarily supported by the employee.
Children of deceased or retired employees are also eligible.
Exception: Undergraduate dependents (currently attending an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school) whose parents have been employed with Alliance Coal, LLC and Affiliates for more than one year but less than two years by the deadline date are eligible to apply for one of the $1,000 nonrenewable awards.
Awards of $2,000 each will be given to the top five high school senior and/or first-time enrollee candidates. Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance (as determined by Scholarship America) in a full-time undergraduate course of study, continued employment of the employee/parent with Alliance Coal, LLC and Affiliates, and continuation of the program by Alliance Coal.
Additional awards of $1,000 each will be given to the next ten highest-ranking candidates. These $1,000 awards are nonrenewable.
Teacher Achievement Award
Each Alliance Coal Scholarship recipient receiving a renewable scholarship may recommend one classroom teacher to receive a $500 Alliance Coal Teacher Achievement Award. This teacher may be chosen from the elementary, junior high, or senior high school that the recipient attended.
Interested students must complete and submit the application, along with a current transcript of grades, by the application deadline of March 1. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable; undergraduate online transcripts must display student name, school name, grade and credit hours earned for each course, and term in which each course was taken. Materials submitted by mail must be postmarked no later than March 1.
Applicants are responsible for gathering and submitting all necessary information by the application deadline. Applications are evaluated on the information supplied; therefore, answer all questions as completely as possible. All information received is considered confidential and is reviewed only by Scholarship America.
Correspondence throughout the application process will be by email. Email messages will be sent to the username and email address registered when you created your account. Students failing to use a valid active email account that can accommodate bulk mail may not receive consideration. Be sure to add firstname.lastname@example.org to your contacts or address book and check your email regularly.
Selection of Recipients
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, an outside appraisal, and potential to succeed. Financial need is not considered.
Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of a participating employer play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.
All applicants will be notified by the following May 1. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.
Payment of Scholarships
Scholarship America processes Alliance Coal scholarship payments on behalf of Alliance Coal, LLC and Affiliates. Payments are made in one installment on August 1. Checks are mailed to each recipient's home address and are made payable to the school for the student's education.
Payments and renewals are contingent upon continued parental employment with (or retirement from) Alliance Coal, LLC and Affiliates.
Recipients have no obligation to Alliance Coal, LLC and Affiliates. They are, however, required to notify Scholarship America of any changes in address, school enrollment, or other relevant information and to send a complete transcript when requested.
Alliance Coal, LLC and Affiliates reserves the right to review the conditions and procedures of this scholarship program and to make changes at any time, including termination of the program.
