Updated Benefits Handbook Now Available

Your online Benefits Handbook has been updated. It now reflects benefit plans and policies in effect as of January 1, 2024. Following are highlights of the changes:

  • Benefit changes communicated to all employees this past fall during Open Enrollment for 2024. Visit CoalBenefits.com/oe for electronic copies of these communications or see the paper copies you previously received.

  • Gene therapy exclusion. The Health Plan will not cover medical or prescription drug charges for or related to gene therapy, which is a treatment that involves the introduction, removal, or alteration of genetic material within the cells of an individual.

  • Clarification regarding the Plan’s exclusion of medical or surgical care related to gender change.

  • Updated limits for Health Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA). As typically occurs each year, the IRS announced updates to certain FSA limits. For the Health Care FSA, the 2024 contribution limit is $3,200, and the maximum amount that can be carried over from 2024 into 2025 is $640. For the Dependent Care FSA, the annual contribution limit is unchanged (generally $5,000), and no carryover is allowed.

  • Updated retirement 401(k) limits. As typically occurs each year, the IRS announced updates to 401(k) contribution limits. The employee pre-tax contribution limit for 2024 is $23,000, and employees who are 50 or older during 2024 can contribute an additional $7,500 catch-up contribution. You can change your contribution rate at any time; contact local HR for a change form, or visit CoalBenefits.com/401k for phone and online listings.

  • Additional retirement 401(k) changes. The following provisions are explained in more detail in the Profit Sharing and Savings Plan section of the handbook, available at CoalBenefits.com/401k:

    • The eligibility requirements for part-time employees have been updated.

    • If you repay a qualified birth or adoption withdrawal within three years, you may be eligible for a tax refund.
